Description

Classified as a Magellenic type barred spiral galaxy SB(s)m, NGC 55 is one of the three large galaxies (NGC253, 55 and 300) in Sculptor. It is 'only' 7 million light years away according to a couple of articles in astronomy and astroophysics 2003 and 2006 which also propose that this object and ngc 300 form a gravitationally bound pair in the foreground and are not part of the Sculptor group.

In 2014 a nova was observed in this galaxy, and should be visible in this image somewhere...
