Description

This is the Dolphin nebula in an HOO pallet.  The Dolphin nebula surrounds a central star that is in the late stages of its life in the pre-supernova phase of its evolution.  It has has thrown off its outer layers as its hydrogen has burnt out.  This is causing the star to to emmit intense solar winds that are pushing matter out away from the star resulting in the nebula.  It is expected that the central star will explode relatively soon and this nebula will cease to exist in this form as  a result.

This was a very challenging image to capture.  It is a dim object that is low on the Southern horizon.  It never climbs above 40 degrees leaving me with only about five decent hours per night to capture it before it sets too far into the heavy light pollution to my West.  Between this and very uncharacteristically cloudy weather in South Florida for this time of year, It took over three weeks to capture 18.5 hours of data.

This is only my second mono image to date and I have a long way to go in perfecting my workflow.  I had hoped to add RGB stars but I am really struggling to collect and process good RGB data between light the pollution and the full moon which shut down the effort.  I am excited to try again next season.
