Description

We are very fortunate in the Southern Hemisphere to have access to a beautiful array of objects to image. Many of them, such as the Southern Pleiades, are well placed to image and easily accessible for most of the night. IC2602 is circumpolar at our latitudes (33.5d south) which provides for plenty of opportunities to grab some data.

This frame has been composed with IC2602 off to one side so that I could include the open cluster Melotte 101 on the left hand side of the image. These two open clusters make for a fine comparison between the very bold, hot blue/white stars of IC2602 and the more composed and discreet gathering of stars in Mellote 101. Prior to composing this image I wasn't aware of the Melotte catalogue of open clusters so I have learnt something in the process. Just goes to prove that you can learn something new every day.

Image was awarded AAPOD on 1 July 2020.
