Description

The Wizard Nebula is the illuminated portion of an Interstellar Gas Cloud lit by the small Open Cluster NGC7380. This Open Cluster was discovered by Caroline Herschel - one of the few Female Astronomers of a Golden Age of Western European Astronomy - and included in the Herschel Catalog published by her brother William Herschel.

It takes a bit of work to visualize the Wizard of this Nebula, but look for the darker "spikes" which form the Hat and Nose and Hands and Cape of a classical pointy-hatted robed wizard facing toward the right with hands outstretched toward the brightest stars in the center of the image.
