Description

This basic tableau is probably one of the most common Images produced by Amateur AstroPhotographers (along with the main Orion Nebulae - at the other end of Orion's Sword). The combo of the Horsehead Nebula (B33 - a column of dense dark Interstellar Dust over a Light-Year tall shadowing the deep red emission nebula behind it) and Flame Nebulae (NGC2024 - an emission nebula illuminated by the heavy blasts of charged stellar wind coming from the bright Star Al-Nitak just above it) and Al-Nitak itself is a "must-do" for almost all of us. The dark brown "noise" below the Flame and Horsehead is more of the same massive Interstellar Dust Cloud (50-100 LY across), through which several rather bright Stars "peek out" to cause the smaller blue illuminated nebulae.

Images captured at the 2014 All-Arizona Star Party.
