Description

The Pleiades is one of the most well-known of all Open Clusters of Stars, with between 6 and 14 members visible to the naked eye depending on viewing conditions (and over 1000 Astronomically identified members). This Cluster has been known as a group since the days of antiquity, being referenced in the Old Testament and Quran as well as the Greek texts of the Iliad and Odyssey. It features in mythologies across the world, from Persian and Arabian to Nordic and Polynesian and several Amerindian Cultures. In Japan, it is "Subaru" and also the pattern emblazoned as the Car Company's Logo.

The bright blue Nebulosity is not part of the Pleiades, but is actually a large Interstellar Dust Cloud between Earth and the Open Cluster being back-lit to show the whorls and whisps and shockwaves that we name the Maia and Merope Nebulas (the two prominent Pleiades lighting much of the Nebulosity).
