Description

NGC 4656 and NGC4657 are a pair of interacting galaxies located in the constellation Canes Venatici. The pair is sometimes informally called the Hockey Stick Galaxies or the Crowbar Galaxy. Both galaxies are members of the NGC4631 Group. NGC4656 ("The Hockey Stick"). North is up, West is to the right. The image is 16.2 arc minutes wide. Note the distant 17.4 and 17.5 magnitude galaxies on either side of the main galaxy. In fact, most of the dim objects in the image are distant galaxies! Discovered in 1787 by William Herschel.

Observation Notes : Bright, Large, very much elongated in PA 30, NGC4657 is superimposed on the North end and makes this strange galaxy look like a hockey stick.
