Description

This is a composite view of the mountains of the Zanskar Range in the Indian Himalaya with the northern sky during the Perseid meteor shower on the evening of August 17, 2014. The location is a high camp at 4630m above the village of Nyeraks that's only accessible on foot with horses to carry heavier gear. I was on a 23 day trek with Kamzang Journeys (kamzang.com) through the remote, high altitude Zanskar region. The distinctive mountain on the left horizon is called Singge or Lion Mtn and is 6000m high. Lights below and to the right of Singge are small solar powered lanterns in the village of Yulchung about 9km away.

The image is a composite of 34 photographs: 4 of the mountains during evening twilight and 30 of the sky taken later. Extra images of the sky were needed as there were occasional clouds from the trailing edge of a cold front. Both mountains and sky were photographed with a Canon 6D and Sigma 35mm f/1.4. I used an AstroTrac for the sky photographs. Exposures for the land were 30s, f/2.8 at ISO 3200 and for the sky 30s, f/1.4 at ISO 1600.

RAW files of the sky were processed using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS6 using settings recommended by Roger N. Clark (www.clarkvision.com) who also gave me great advice on gear. Land and sky panoramas were assembled with PTGui Pro then combined using Photoshop. The full size image is approximately 10,000 x 9,000 pixels. This was my first attempt at a composite night landscape.
