Description

NGC 2070 is known as the Tarantula Nebula. Its likeness to a spider is best seen visually, since the Ha regions captured by the CCD chip overwhelm the visual appearance. The Tarantula is an H II region in the Large Magellanic Cloud and has an apparent magnitude of 8. Since its distance is about 49 kpc (160,000 light-years), it follows that this is an extremely luminous object. Its luminosity is so great that if it were as close to Earth as the Orion Nebula, it would cast shadows.
