Description

This super wide-angle view of our home galaxy - the Milky Way - runs from the constellation Orion at upper left to Crux at lower right. Most of what is shown here always lies below the horizon for northern hemisphere astronomers, so it is a special treat to be able to travel south of the equator and see this part of the sky.

The brightest stars in this view are: Procyon (near left edge, below centre); Sirius (middle, left of centre); Canopus (just right of and a little above centre), and Achernar (top right corner). The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds lie at in the upper right quadrant. The distinctive star pattern of the constellation Crux - the Southern Cross - is at extreme lower right.
