Description

Photographed near Coonabarabran (site of the Anglo-Australian Observatory at Siding Spring, New South Wales, Australia)

This irregular dwarf galaxy, located in the southern sky in the constellation Tucana, lies about 200,000 light years from our own Milky Way galaxy, and is one of the most distant objects that can be seen with the unaided eye.

The bright globular star cluster 47 Tucanae is near the centre at the bottom edge of the frame. See a closer view here:
