Description

My original plan was to make this animated gif of the Milkyway vertical in frame with Rolnick Observatory Tower moving in the foreground. That idea will have to wait as I forgot my computer when I met Dan and Dave at WAS on Friday.

Dan had showed me a similar movie recently and it peaked my interest as the sky standing still and the ground moving is what’s really going on. We tend to forget this as we like to see our environment from our perspective.

I changed the plan to make a similar image at home with Orion and comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy). It’s not everyday a camera will pick up a comet without a decent amount of magnification. I used the club’s Canon Rebel T51 mounted on top of my first scope which is a Celestron Astromaster 114EQ. No easy way to mount a camera to my 8” SCT. I used my Celestron AVX mount to do the tracking.

Not sure how to fix the sky gradient issue but I think it’s related to the limited amount of colors (256) available in this image format. If I figure it out, I’ll upload a new version.
