Description

Animated GIF - Jupiter and its moons ballet. I had the chance to see a beautiful and free show in the sky, in our backyard in Pointe-aux-Trembles (Montreal, Canada). Images are from January 25th 2015 10:20 p.m. until 00:47 on January 26th, 2015. I made 52 short films of 90 seconds for getting 52 stacked pictures. I then assembled these 52 images in an animated gif file. Here is the result.

We see one of the moons of Jupiter (Europa) arising behind the planet. Then it "meets another moon (Ganymede) which moves in the opposite direction. We can then observe the shadow of Ganymede on Jupiter (eclipse). A third moon, Io, continues its orbit to the right to finally get completely out of my camera's field of view. All this time, we can clearly see the rotation of the planet on itself. The Great Red Spot (GRS) is visible during a portion of the sequences, on the right of the planet.
