Description

This is an image of Mare Humorum (upper portion of the image) with the moon in a waxing gibbous phase. The formation is an impact basin about 425 km in diameter that has filled to a depth of about 3 km with basaltic lava. No samples of the area were obtained by the Apollo missions, so its age has been estimated by other means to be roughly 4 billion years. Notably, orbital deviations of Lunar Orbiters have revealed a large mass concentration at the center of the mare. The large crater at the top of the mare is Gassendi. It is partially filled with the lava that formed the mare and only the crater rim and the tops of its central peaks remain visible.

A filter stack of wide band yellow and red was used.
