Description

A careful look at this image reveals a surprising number of galaxies both near and far toward the constellation Ursa Major. The most striking is NGC 3718, the warped spiral galaxy near picture center. NGC 3718's spiral arms look twisted and extended, mottled with young blue star clusters. Drawn out dust lanes obscure its yellowish central regions. A mere 150 thousand light-years to the right is another large spiral galaxy, NGC 3729. The two are likely interacting gravitationally, accounting for the peculiar appearance of NGC 3718. While this galaxy pair lies about 52 million light-years away, the remarkable Hickson Group 56 can also be seen clustered below NGC 3718, near the bottom of the frame. Hickson Group 56 consists of five interacting galaxies and lies over 400 million light-years away. [Source APOD]

The image was captured with the venerable Meade 12"LX200 Classic and the Atik 383L+ mono CCD at F7.16. Astronomik's LRGB filters were used. All subs were taken at 1x1 bin, -10C, and 10 minutes each.

Image:

Lum : 89 subs (14.83hr) on Mar 16th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 26th, 27th, and 28th.

Red : 12 subs (2.00 hr) on Mar 24th, and 26th.

Grn : 10 subs (1.67 hr) on Mar 24th, and 26th.

Blu : 9 subs (1.50 hr) on Mar 24th, and 26th.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th. Only L was used to develop the Luminance image. R, G and B were collected for the color mix.

North is up, and this is a very slight crop. Image B presents colors that are more consistent with the APOD image.

The background is particularly noisy. I was unable to eliminate all of the noise and artifacts while trying to keep as much of the galaxy nebulosity. New flats may have improved this problem.
