Description

NGC6445 is also called the "Box Nebula" because is seemingly rectangular shape. NGC 6445, a small planetary nebula, lives in a very busy part of the Milky Way in Sagittarius, just west of a mag 7.6 star. The distance to NGC6445 is estimated at about 4500 light years. The brighter part of the nebula is about the size of Jupiter. Discovered in 1786 by William Herschel.

Observation notes: NGC6445 is a planetary nebula. With the 6" scope and a 22mm eyepiece it was pretty faint, pretty small, not brighter in the middle and irregularly round. This planetary is "above" a globular cluster (NGC6440) of about the same brightness, but the globular is twice its size. Raising the power with the 8.8mm eyepiece shows the nebula as still pretty faint, but it now has some size and is elongated 2X1 in a PA of 135 degrees. NGC6445 with the 13 inch is pretty bright, large and has an elongated box shape at 200X. The outer rim of this planetary is brighter than the center. It shows a small dark lane involved at high power. A white and blue double star is nearby. The late Pierre Schwaar called this object the “Micro Dumbbell”.
