Description

This, in my opinion, is one of the most awesome astronomical sights you will ever see - Messier M16 - The Eagle Nebula, including the Pillars of Creation.

About 7000 light years away in the constellation Serpens, you can see many of the "spires" or "pillars" poking into the nebula here. They are massive in size - some almost 10 light years tall!

Sadly, the Pillars of Creation (the objects toward the bottom of the nebula) have already been blown away by a supernova that exploded in that region some 8000-9000 years ago... It will take the light from the "blown away" pillars another 1000 years just to reach earth!
