Description

NGC 6744 , about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Pavo. It is thought to be one of the most Milky Way-like spiral galaxies in our immediate vicinity, with flocculent (fluffy) arms and an elongated core. It also has at least one distorted companion galaxy (NGC 6744A) superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds. This galaxy ended up being much dimmer than I origianlly thought, and 8.2 hours of exposure time was just enough to bring out the finer detail (after many processing attempts) Image was taken from the superb dark skies at blesfontein Guest Farm in the Sutherland district
