Description

NGC 2359, due to its shape popularly called Thor's helmet, is an emission nebula in the constellation of Canis Major. It consists of a gas bubble with wing-like appendages formed by the strong stellar winds of a super massive Wolf-Rayet Star. Such extremely massive stars (10-250 solar masses) are at the end of their development and repel large amounts of matter in form of stellar winds with speeds of up to 2000 km/s into the surrounding space.
