Description

Very widefield with 300mm, so sorry these are pretty faint fuzzies unless you zoom in fully. I thought it was nice to be able to capture M88 and M90 in the same frame, and still get some level of fine detail.

2023 update: I took the exact same gear and made an attempt across two nights in April 2023, but this time with the lens stropped down to f/5.8 by using 52mm aperture mask (and I also had the lens stopped down to f5.6 iirc, so got a tiny bit of aperture blade diffraction spikes). This really helped with the coma, but at a lot of loss for light and the image had more noise. Still pleased how it turned out. 477 frames of 60"

Note: the 2021 and 2023 data were not combined. each was separate. I just didn't want to create another astrobin project for the same target with same gear so put them both here.

Original 2021 version:
The Canon 300mm f2.8L certainly is a light bucket, and pretty sharp, but try as I may I can not get a pic that I am super happy with. It seems the stars have coma, or at least a slightly pointy comet / badminton shuttlecock shape. Even the rounder ones in the middle have a bit of a color halo that appears , more so on the edge that points away from the center. I don't know if I will continue trying to use it, this may have been its last astro photoshoot. It's actually at the weight limit of my mount anyhow, weighing in around 10.5 lbs with camera and guidescope, and my lil' SkyGuider is only rated for 11lbs. It has to be carefully balanced, but guiding is pretty much the same as my smaller 400mm that weighs half the weight.
