Comparison of Stacking Software

Description

I did this for a friend and i think, this could be of some interest for this community.

This is a comparison of the result of stacking 50 frames out of the dataset I used for this image.

All programms are freely available.

DeepSkyStacker is available for Windows Platforms. Its advantages are simple post stacking procedures and it allows grouping of images to ease the stacking of multi night projects.

Regim is Java based. Besides stacking it allows some simple post stacking processing, plate solving and automatic color calibration using b-v star catalogs.

Theli is only avaliable for Linux platforms, but i run it in a virtual machine on a Windows host. As it is made as a professional tool for professional astronomers, it is neither easy to install nor easy to run, but it has a high reputation for producing very good results. Registering matches each frame to a star catalog. G-2 type color calibration is available.

To produce comparable results, none of the post processing features have been used. Since Theli produces RGB separeted results, RGB layers have been stacked by using fitswork.

Version B:

According to a remark from themos, i tried Iris as well and included the result. Iris seems to be a very powerful software with post stacking processes. This time, as it was my first attempt on using Iris, i just worked down according to the tutorial, using all default values. So the result may very well be far inferiour to what can be achieved with this software. Works very fast.

Final Version:

User multispeed kindly provided a PixInsight created stack, which has been added. Many thanks for contributing!
