Description

Sh2-101, the Tulip Nebula, is shown embedded in the rich Cygnus Star Cloud of the Milky Way with lots of colorful stars in this image. One of them is the visible companion of the black hole and X-ray source Cygnus X-1 which historically was the first identified black hole. It is found as the bottom star (large blue super giant HD226868) of the two vertically-arranged stars in the lower right corner of the image. Its non-visible companion of 5.6 day periodicity and 20 to 35 solar masses is almost certainly a black hole, given neutron stars cannot exceed three solar masses. The exciting star of Sh2-101 is believed to be the 9th magnitude star HD 227018 and others. Sh2-101 is at 6000 light years distance in the Orion Arm.

6.9 hr LRGB taken at D.A.R.C. Observatory, Mercey Hot Springs, CA, on 6/12/15 and 6/13/15.
Exposure: Lum: 14x16m (3.73h); RGB: 48x4m (3.2h); 6.9h total

3/1/16 Finally found a star reduction method that could handle this high-density field so I could bring out more of the nebula (Dave Watson's StarReduction PI script).
