Description

(Click on the original revision for the full, wide-field version).

Arp 188, also known as UGC 10214 or PGC 57129, is a distorted galaxy in the constellation Draco at a distance of about 400 million light years. Including its long tail, the entire galaxy is under 4 arcminutes long, and its overall magnitude is just 14.7. The galaxy collided with another galaxy that is now behind it. For a better view, check out the awesome Hubble Telescope image of this galaxy, which shows the intruding galaxy departing behind it.

Part of the data for this image was obtained on two nights at Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge in Texas; a third night of data was acquired at Capitan Gap, Lincoln Co., NM, the darkest site at which I have ever imaged. Without extremely dark skies, this galaxy would have been all but impossible to image in color. It was the most difficult object I have ever had to process, and I would advocate using a more sensitive/lower noise camera if you plan to tackle it. RGB frames were just barely above darks, and it took every ounce of noise reduction I could muster to pull the colors out. It has taken a few revisions to get the colors and sky background to my liking.
