Description

I have always found M97 a difficult subject and at times I wonder how it could be spotted by Messier and Méchain with their 18th century equipment, sure skies were way darker back then, but nevertheless ... in my opinion even harder than M101.

And I'm talking about how I see them on a screen, with light collected for 20-30s by a high Q.E. CMOS sensor, not by naked eyes.

Anyway, I summed my previous light frames from May 23rd with new pics taken on May 31th with a different scope (Meade 2045D the first time, Bresser 102/460 the second).

There was quite a waxing moon to spoil a bit the second attempt, but in any case I find the result rather shoddy, compared to what you may obtain with the same exposure on, say, M27 or M57.

Perhaps only M76 is in the same league among Messier objects.
