Description

About 10 days after my quick effort on the Trifid with the HyperStar at F/2, I was testing a new F/7 reducer on the C14. As I discovered, the reducer isn't perfect, but it isn't absolutely terrible either. The other problem is that when I took this data, the seeing was really terrible and the wind was blowing pretty strongly. The C14 should produce an image that is considerably sharper than this result and it drove me a bit crazy trying to sharpen it during processing. The problem is that the overall softness is mostly due to the seeing, which was probably in the range of 4-6 arc-seconds. I experimented with short, 30 second exposures using ISO 6400 due to the high wind. My guiding curves were relatively horrible at over 1 arc-sec due to the conditions. The last thing that conspired against me was that it was pretty warm. The sensor ran at about 24C so the noise was pretty pronounced. I tried taking darks but without temperature control my darks came out being taken at just about 30C so I didn't use that data. I may go back at try it just to see what it does. This image is more noisy than I'd like and the sharpness isn't up to snuff, but overall the result is worth sharing. It's cool to see how versatile the C14 is ranging from F/2 to F/7 and F/11.

Rev B: Cloudy weather provided a little time to revisit the processing on this image and I'm pretty happy with the improvement. This was mostly processed with PI with only a bit of touchup in PS to finish it off. CCC always welcome! ... John
