Description

This object is an open star cluster located 1700 light years away in the constellation of Taurus at a declination of +19 degrees. This magnitude 6.4 cluster of 200 stars spans 40 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 20 light years.

This is a beautiful large cluster, framed by several bright orange stars. The cluster is almost twice as wide as our full moon and is visible to the naked eye in dark skies. It is interesting to me that the stars are not distributed uniformly throughout the cluster, but seem to appear in clumps of 2 to 3 bright stars separated by dark void areas.
