Description

M11 is a wide open cluster of 2900 stars and distant of 6000 Al, 500 of them are brightest than the Mag 14. It's one of the richest known open cluster, its view is outstanding in a telescope : it is surely one of the most beautiful open cluster of the sky ! It is placed in the scutum Constellation, 3° from the galaxy plane.

It is composed of hot giant B stars and is around 220 Million years old. Brightest stars seems to be are around Mag 11, that is to say that they are around 100X brigther than the Sun (around Mag 16 at 6000 Al).

M11 is situated near the northern edge of a rich Milky Way star cloud, the Scutum Cloud. These clouds are visible on the border of the image. We can also see the very rich background on stars, most of them seems to be old reddish stars. I estimate that around 150 000 stars are visible on this image !

On the bottom / left , there's a small open cluster NGC6704 (Mag 9.2). This one seems to be closer (2900 Al).

It seems that's there another small one on the middle / top (between the two bright stars), but I have not found any reference to him on internet.

Image taken with 2h50 exposure with a 80 mm refractor, 30 km from Paris in a rural area (SQM around 19).
