Description

M31 (The Andromeda Galaxy)

While not the closest galaxy to the Milky Way, Andromeda is the closes spiral galaxy and, in mass, nearly our twin. It mass is currently estimated to be slightly under our own, but dew to a higher percentage of sun like stars it is more luminous. M32 a dwarf satellite galaxy of Andromeda is visible in this image as well. Andromeda and the Milky Way are expected to collide in approximately 4.5 billion years.

This image was acquired partially in my backyard and partially during a recent AAS Star party at their dark sky site Canyon of the Eagles.
