Description

A very deep NGC 6946, 65 hours worth, including 5 hours of luminance from last year. The raw subs were excellent, with an average seeing of 1.8", and all shot under nearly moonless skies.

The extent of the galaxy is clear.

The first version of the galaxy was really posted in error - I forgot to convert to sRGB, so the colours look a little washed out. The second version I just converted to sRGB, but as Frank pointed out, this clipped the histogram a little.

For the final version, I wanted to try and accentuate the outer parts of the galaxy. First, I tried Rogelio Bernal Andreo's techniques from "Lessons from the Masters", but found that the galaxy was such a large part of the image that the central part of the galaxy also got enhanced brightness which reduced colour saturation.

The second attempt was much simpler - I just used the Curves tool to accentuate just the brightness range corresponding to the outer parts of the galaxy.

Finally, to get round the problem Frank pointed out, I applied the conversion to sRGB BEFORE I applied the final tweaks to the blackpoint to avoid clipping any unnecessary pixels.
