Description

This object, also known as NGC 2782, is a galaxy located 130 million light years away in the constellation of Lynx at a declination of +40 degrees. This 11.6 magnitude galaxy spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 150,000 light years.

This galaxy structure is complex and fascinating. I love its asymmetry and the long wide arm to the left. It looks like a merger may be happening, with a structure that includes star streams, oddly oriented dust lanes, arcs of bright blue star clusters, and most notably what looks to me like 2 cores in the center. There are a few galaxies out there which are noted for having 2 cores, but typically one of those "cores" has more distinct edges and resembles a star to me. In this case, I think the 2 bright regions in the center are actually 2 cores.

Many small distant galaxies are seen in the image. The relatively bright small galaxy about halfway from the main galaxy to the right edge of the image is 1.5 billion light years away, and the very faint galaxy further to the right by that same distance, near the right edge, is almost 4 billion light years away.

The edge-on galaxy in the lower left corner is UGC 4872, 400 million light years away.
