Description

This field is the center portion of the Monoceros R2 star forming region. The four NGC reflection nebulae (from left to right) are NGC 2170, 2182, 2183, and 2185. The six vdB objects are vdb 67, 68, 69, 72, 73, and 74. Some of these vdB objects also coincide with the NGC objects. Prominent dark nebulae around the reflection nebulae and star forming areas are Dobashi 4977, 4978, 4980 and PGCC G214.21-12.42. As a star forming region, many stars are not visible in visual spectrum because they are obscured by interstellar matter and dust. Open cluster MWSC 0771 is seen in the visual spectrum. Three other open clusters can only be seen in the IR spectrum (3.4 micron). The annotated image shows a false color overlay of IR imaging from the WISE survey. The open clusters NGC 2183 Cluster, Mon R2 Stellar Cluster, and MWSC 0732 pop out in the IR overlay.  These objects and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image
