Description

The dominant galaxy in this image is NGC 5248. It is classified SAB(rs)bc - barred galaxy with spiral and ring features. It is about 39 to 49 million light years distant. NGC 4559 is a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster. Also in this image are galaxies PGC 48114, PGC 48090, and UGC 08575 (also a member of the Virgo Cluster) and PGC 48114 is a Seyfert Galaxy. There are numerous other background galaxies in this image - these galaxies range in distance from 303 to 2,902 million light years. Also in this image field are three galaxy groups - presumably fairly distant but no distance estimates are available. These galaxies, galaxy groups, and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image. Horizontal FOV is approximately 38 arc minutes (0.81 arcsec/pix image scale on the full size image).
