Description

This image captures two unique and rarely imaged objects. The long, thin galaxy at upper left is IC2233, one of the flattest galaxies known. This object is a prime example of a super-thin galaxy, where the galaxy’s diameter is at least ten times larger than the thickness. The bluish color that can be seen along the disk gives evidence of the spiral nature of the galaxy, indicating the presence of hot, luminous, young stars born out of clouds of interstellar gas. The bright star seen on the right side of this galaxy is just in the foreground and is not part of the galaxy. The galaxy at lower right, NGC 2357, is nicknamed the Bear Paw Galaxy. This is one of the most interesting and unique galaxy shapes I have seen. I do not understand the structure of this galaxy and I cannot find a good description of its structure in any literature. There are 5 other faint galaxies seen in this image, including NGC2357A which is above the Bear Paw Galaxy.
