Description

Messier 81 (Bode's Galaxy), left, is a grand design spiral galaxy about 12 million light-years away, with a diameter of 90,000 light years, in the constellation Ursa Major. Messier 82 (M82), right, is a starburst galaxy approximately 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. A member of the M81 Group, it is about five times more luminous than the Milky Way and has a center one hundred times more luminous. This pair of galaxies are a popular spring target. With extensive integration time you can see the Integrated Flux Nebula or IFN for short. This is the "cloudy" area of the image and is dust within the Milky Way that is illuminated by all the stars of our galaxy
