Description

This is M17, commonly known as the Swan Nebula, in the constellation Sagittarius. In some literature, it is also called the Omega Nebula or the Checkmark Nebula because of its shape. This object is well known among amateur astronomers since it can be easily seen even in small telescopes. The nebula is between 5000 and 6000 light years distant and spans 15 light years across.
