Description

A Classic among the classics... But that we had not always done: the Horse's Head (Barnard 33) is a small dark nebula in the constellation Orion that stands out against the background of red draperies of the nebula emission in Hydrogen IC 434. It appears as coming out of the cloud band of dense dust Lynds 1760.But in fact the object we prefer in this image is located below to the left of the Horse's Head, the nebula in reflection and emission NGC2023. Located about 1500 light-years from Earth, with a size of 4.3 light-years, the NGC 2023 nebula is illuminated and sculpted by a very young and massive bright star of spectral type B. Surprisingly colorful and complex filaments are visible. Scattered emission points also come from herbig-Haro objects in the region, associated with the energy jets of newborn stars.
