Description

This object is nicknamed the Little Cocoon Nebula, also known as LBN 053.54+00.04.  It does look a bit similar to the Cocoon.  It is a faint emission and reflection nebula, located about 3500 light years away in the constellation of Sagitta at a declination of +18 degrees.  It spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 6 light years.

The red hydrogen emission nebula is not spectacular, but I find the reflected nebolusity above it to be subtle and pretty.  I like the dark dust lanes running through it and the bright small emission gash in the middle of it, competing for attention with the adjacent faint blue nebulosity.
