Description

This object, also known as Gum 11, is an HII region located 25,000 light years away in the southern constellation of Puppis at a declination of -36 degrees. The region spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 20 light years.

I was surprised to learn that NGC 2579 is only the brighter, larger top part of this object. The bottom part is designated as ESO 370-9. Both objects have recently been considered to be both planetary nebula and reflection nebulae. It is easy to tell in this image that they are both HII regions. They look to me to be part of the same object, but I have not seen that conclusion made anywhere in the literature.
