Description

IC405 (Sh2-229) is a bright emission nebula in Auriga, combined with reflection nebula (catalogued as GN 05.13.0), known by its common name "The Flaming Star Nebula". The nebula surrounds the runaway variable star AE Aur which did not form the nebula (though excites it with radiation and forms powerful shock fronts within it), but instead is merely passing through - AE Aur may have been ejected due to the collision between two multiple star systems in the trapezium region of the Orion Nebula, with other potential runaways appearing to have similarly originated (eg Mu Columbae, 53 Arietis). In the image there is also a fainter reflection nebula (here to the south of the extended nebulosity from IC405), but this oddly appears to be catalogued in the LEDA (PGC) and MCG catalogues - possibly an old classification error?

This image combines LRGB with Ha data to show both the main colours of the nebulae and stars, but also the extended faint nebulosity that surrounds the area.
