Description

The Draco Trio of galaxies consists of the beautiful grand spiral NGC 5985, the elliptical NGC 5982 and the edge-on NGC 5981. All are about 100 million light-years distant, and all are interesting in their own right. The spiral NGC 5985 is a Seyfert galaxy, and according to Lopes et al. may also contain a black hole within its active galactic nucleus. The elliptical NGC 5982 has peculiar faint sharp edge features that are thought to be formed by galaxy mergers, according to Del Burgo et al, based on Spitzer IR and HST/ACS optical data. Further the kinematics show two orbital families based on analysis of the velocities, according to Oosterloo et al., which supports the same conclusion. Finally, the edge-on NGC 5981 is a good example of a truncated disk, where the extent of the stellar disk cuts off sharply, while the gaseous disk continues further out, as explained by Florido et al.

This image is the first light for my ZWO ASI2600 MC Pro CMOS camera, my first foray away from a DSLR. Using SharpCap and native drivers made the transition relatively easy--though I certainly can't say yet I have optimized how to make full use of my new camera. First impressions are very positive, noise is low, and there is less vibration without a shutter--so my stars are better. And with the camera buffer I get few dropouts even with a 30 foot active cable, and I am loosing less than a second between subs (thermal cooling means no need to delay between frames to keep the sensor cool). Also I love the SharpCap polar alignment feature, using the plate solving polar alignment, I can align in 5 minutes right at prime focus with my f6.3 reducer.
