Description

This is a constellation-size image taken with my Sigma zoom lens (set at 50mm, f/3.5), modified Canon 1100D (ISO1600), and star tracker. This was a very quick image with just 12x90second light frames, no guiding, and no calibration I did one week-night right after darkness set in in March.

This is just a quick stacking of the twelve images, a light pollution gradient subtraction in Astro Pixel Processor, and a little color enhancement in the two nebula regions. The more I've looked at this image, the more impressed I am with how much content got captured in just a few minutes. The zoom lens is certainly not perfect, but I really like how it performed. Barnard's loop is also evident if I stretched the image heavily enough, but at the expense of introducing a lot of noise to the image, so I will leave that for next time Orion is visible and get a little bit of narrowband data to merge in.

And, by the way, one can just see the tips of some tree branches sneaking in the lower right corner, but I didn't want to crop Rigel out of the image...….
