This image began as an evaluation of the latest version of StarNet’s (v2) and StarXTerminator’s (v8) performance on a galaxy image. In this case, at least, SN did a better job of removing the stars in the foreground of the galaxy, and even better of some of the stars surrounding the galaxy. Both codes preserved the structures of the galaxy quite well. The image present here devolves from SN.

As for NGC 3621, Wikipedia describes it as having a “low mass supermassive black hole” at its center.” Low mass” but “supermassive”? Well, whatevs! But according to an ESO description, the galaxy has one large black hole and two smaller ones near its center. Perhaps these three gravity lows have imparted an unusual geometry to the central region. The region brightens, but lacks the bulge common in spiral-galaxy centers.

Anyway, enjoy…
Alex

Title: Halos-reduced version

Description: Based on criticisms by the person most responsible for my continuing image-processing improvement, J. Kutney, I spend several days developing a method to subdue some of those darn halos that arise when using StarNet or StarXTerminator. This is not perfect, but I think it's significantly improved
