Description

North is up in this image. This image field features a line of galaxies form the upper left to the lower right. Starting in the upper left is NGC 3953 - a barred spiral galaxy. At the other end in the lower right is the smaller NGC 3917. Further to the lower right corner is the galaxy cluster Abell 1387. The galaxies in this cluster appear very small due to their large distance from Earth - approximately 1.77 billion light years. The overall cluster spans 14.5 million light years across. The smaller galaxies in this field and in the Abell 1387 galaxy cluster are better seen in the larger image. The more notable galaxies are identified in the the annotated image. NGC 3953 is 61 million light years distant from Earth. NGC 3917 is about 56 million light years distant. Horizontal FOV is 88'
