Description

North is up in this image. This image is dominated by the emission nebula known as LBN 331. The bright star central in the image is 32 Cygni. 32 Cygni is a binary star system (32 Cygni A and B). The orbital plane of the two stars is nearly aligned with the line of sight to Earth. This alignment from Earth's viewpoint becomes an eclipsing variable star system known as V1488 Cyg. This emission nebula lies (visually) in a dense star region of the Milky Way. This field is also well represented in the DWB catalog - the brighter filaments of LBN 331 also have the DWB designations of DWB 179, 178, 177, 172, 171 (from left to right). These objects as well as some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image. 32 Cygni is at a distance from Earth estimated between 1,100 to 1,174 light years. Horizontal FOV is 116'
