Description

Here is an image in Hydrogen Alpha 7nm, showing the core region of IC5070. Several pillars of gas protrude from the main body. The longest, shows at its tip, evidence of new star formation. Visible is HH555, a Herbig-Haro phenomenon, caused by thin jets of gas ejected from the polar regions of the newly formed star. These jets interact with the surrounding gas forming visible elongated cones. They are quite fleeting, astronomically, lasting only a few thousand years.
