Description

Here is an image in Hydrogen Alpha 7nm, Showing a close up of NGC 7293, the Helix Nebula. The planetary nebula consists of rings of gas being expelled from the PNN, or planetary nebular nucleus.

Within these rings are a phenomenon known as Cometary Knots, which are radially disbursed around the PNN, each with a bright "cusp" and then a tail. There are estimated to be nearly 20,000 cometary knots within the Nebula, giving it the appearance of an iris, hence the name "The Eye of God".
