Description

NGC 6946, the Fireworks Galaxy (also known as Arp 29, and Caldwell 12), is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 65 million light-years away, in the constellations Cepheus and Cygnus. It was discovered by William Herschel on September 9, 1798. NGC 6946 is highly obscured by interstellar matter of the Milky Way galaxy, as it is quite close to the galactic plane. Nine supernovae (SN 1917A, SN 1939C, SN 1948B, SN 1968D, SN 1969P, SN 1980K, SN 2002hh, SN 2004et, and SN 2008S) have been observed in NGC 6946. (Source Wikipedia).

Images captured with a Meade 12"LX200 at F7.5 with both the Canon Xsi and new Atik 383L+ mono.

CANON: Employed total of 85 subs at ISO1600 and 10 minutes each (14.17 hr) on 8/22 (25), 8/23 (16), 8/28 (17), and 8/29 (27).

ATIK 383L+: Employed total of 50 subs at Bin 1x1, 0C and 10 minutes each (8.33 hr) on 9/1 (18), 9/06 (23) and 9/17 (9).

Processing was done with PixInsight. This is a medium crop, due to differences in FOV between the two cameras -- North is up.

This was my first use of the Atik CCD, and first time to combine color from the DSLR with luminance from the CCD. All in all I was pleased with the results. At this point, more luminance does not appear to be any benefit.
