Description

I discovered a script in Pixinsight that I found to be extremely interesting. It is the Annotate Image script that allows you to annotate a plate solved image with objects from several different catalogs. With this particular image I wanted to understand how many galaxies were in the frame. To my surprise, most of the objects in this image are galaxies - approximately 3791. I used the PGC, NGC and SDSS catalogs in my search with a limiting magnitude of 21!

In this gif animation I’ve overlaid the results from the annotate image script. Another great feature about this script is that ic can also output a CSV file with a listing of all the objects it finds along with x/y coordinates, ra/dec coordinates and in the case of SDSS searches it will also list the magnitude of the objects. I didn’t include the object name of the SDSS objects as it would have rendered this image illegible.
