Here are two views of a portion of the Veil Nebula, NGC 6995. One was taken with conventional color filters (Luminance--clear, Red, Green, and Blue) and the other with narrowband filters (Luminance, Hydrogen Alpha, Oxygen III, and Sulfur II). The LRGB image is color mapped in the normal way; the narrowband image is color mapped so that H-Alpha maps to 656.28nm, OIII maps to 500.7nm and SII maps to 672.4.

Using narrowband filters allows the astronomer to better visualize what molecules are emitting which light and from where.

Both images taken at Cascade Mountain Observatory the night/morning of 9/3-9/4/2015. The images took almost 6 hours of exposure time.
