Description

The Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888 (a.k.a. Caldwell 27, Sharpless 105) is an emission nebula and was formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136. This wind collided with, and energized a slower wind previously ejected when the star became a red giant 400,000 years ago. Results of this are a shell and two shock waves, with one moving outward and the other moving inward. The inboard shock wave heats the stellar wind to X-ray-emitting temperatures. The nebula is located about 5000 light years away in the constellation Cygnus. (Source Wikipedia).

The image was captured with a Meade 12"LX200 at F7.5, using the Canon XSi and Atik 383L+ mono cameras.

DSLR: The modified Canon 450D (XSi) produced a total of 150 subs at ISO1600 and 10 minutes each (25.0 hr) on 8/02 (8), 8/03 (27), 8/06 (18), 8/07 (31), 8/09 (2), 8/10 (33), and 8/11 (31).

CCD: The Atik 383L+ mono produced a total of 88 subs with binning 1x1 and 0C at 10 minutes each (14.67 hr) on 9/18 (17), 9/19 (24), 9/20 (25), 9/21 (9), and 9/22 (13).

Processing was done with PixInsight. This is a medium crop, due to differences in FOV between the two cameras -- North is up.

This was my second use of the Atik CCD. Again I combined the mono CCD image with the color DSLR image. This effort was a bit disappointing. It left the finished product looking over processed.
